Clambake on Coopers Beach

Clambake on Coopers Beach starts while the sun is still high over the water. Cars pull into the lot, doors open, and everyone takes something down to the sand. Kids run ahead, dropping towels in a trail, already in and out of the waves. A few climb up the lifeguard stand and jump into a pile of sand they’ve built below. A frisbee arcs across the dry sand, and a soccer ball moves in the other direction. Adults follow with chairs, bags, and coolers, walking the same path towards the water. This collection is built for evenings when the meal happens right at the ocean’s edge.

Arriving and Marking the Spot

The first job is to claim the space. Four to six deck chairs open in a loose row facing the ocean. A family beach bag in sailcloth is emptied onto a wide blanket: towels, sweatshirts, sunglasses, and a couple of thin throws for later. A seagrass square pouf becomes the center surface for everything that needs to stay off the sand. Coolers sit just behind the chairs, within reach but out of the way. The dog has a rattan water bowl that stays in one spot, filled from spare bottles so he can drink without chasing waves. From a distance, the setup looks simple, but each piece has a specific place and purpose.

Setting the Beach Table

The clambake table is straightforward and deliberate. A folding table is leveled into the sand and covered with a casual tablecloth that can shake off salt and shells. Melamine dinner plates that read like porcelain take lobster, clams, corn, and salad and stay steady in the hand. Smaller melamine plates stand in for bread, fruit, or dessert. Cloth napkins in a simple stripe or solid are folded once and left at each place. A pair of bamboo lamps sits low along the center, ready to be switched on once the sun drops, their shades casting a warm, contained light across the table. Everything is unbreakable, stable, and easy to rinse at the end of the night.

Drinks on the Sand

Drinks stay organized from the start. An on-the-go leather wine bar holds bottles, an opener, and a small set of essentials so nothing rolls in the sand. A cooler keeps water, soda, and mixers cold. Santorini tumblers in teal and clear work for everything: water for kids, rosé or white wine for adults, and lemonade that moves between the two. Filled tumblers sit directly in the sand or on the cloth without tipping. No one is thinking about glass on the beach, only about keeping ahead of the next round of pours.

Cooking, Clambakes, and the Meal

The food can be as involved or as simple as the evening allows. For bigger gatherings, East End Clambakes can handle the full spread, from pots and steamers to cleanup. For a do-it-yourself night, clams, lobster, and corn come from The Clamman in Southampton or Bostwick’s in East Hampton and go straight into the pots. When everything is ready, trays and bowls move from the cooking area to the table in a few trips. People eat with their feet in the sand, facing the water, and the table holds up to the pace of a real meal.

Games and the Last Light

While the clambake cooks and after plates are filled, the beach stays busy. A Jenga-style block game sits on the blanket, pulled apart and rebuilt between trips to the shoreline. As the sun drops behind the dunes, the sky goes through full color before it darkens. Lanterns are lit and placed around the chairs and table so the whole area reads as one pool of warm light. Once the stars come out, kids run the last of their energy off with sparklers near the waterline while adults finish what is left in their glasses. When the night is over, plates stack, tumblers empty, and everything is carried back up to the car in a small number of trips.
